Can you roof in hot weather?
By Best Roofing Answers · Published May 2026 · Updated July 2026
Asphalt shingles can be installed in temperatures up to about 85–90°F ambient, but crews commonly start at dawn and stop by early afternoon when deck-surface temperatures exceed 140°F because soft shingles scuff, seal strips over-activate, and worker heat exposure rules apply.
Why heat is a scheduling issue, not a bond issue
Manufacturer bulletins from GAF and Owens Corning note that above ~140°F deck temperature, asphalt mat becomes soft enough to be marred by foot traffic and knee scuffs, leading to premature granule loss. Crews mitigate by walking on plywood, working early hours, and dry-laying material before installing.
OSHA heat-exposure guidance also caps continuous work in direct sun above ~90°F, which is why reputable crews take 1:1 work:rest ratios by mid-afternoon in summer.
