Does homeowners insurance cover wind damage to a roof?
By Best Roofing Answers · Published May 2026 · Updated July 2026
Wind damage from a covered storm is commonly included in standard homeowners policies, but many coastal and tornado-belt policies now separate wind coverage under a percentage deductible (1–5%), exclude 'named storm' events without a separate rider, and reduce payout to Actual Cash Value on older roofs.
What counts as wind damage
Per ASTM D7158, asphalt shingles are wind-classified from Class D (up to 90 mph) to Class H (up to 150 mph) under test conditions. Adjusters look for lifted, creased, or missing shingles and shingles with broken seal strips. Wind speeds strong enough to damage code-compliant shingles are typically 60 mph sustained or higher; NOAA SPC storm data is commonly used to verify.
In hurricane-exposed states (FL, TX, LA, SC, NC) policies increasingly separate a 'named storm' or 'hurricane' deductible from the general wind/hail deductible. Check both lines on your declarations page.
